Mountaintown

I always find it comical that my girlfriend's family has settled in the remotest of small towns in British Columbia's forested mountain haven. She (and I) are the furthest from small-town folk, so you can imagine the ruckus we cause simply walking down the main street. This photo was taken the last time we were up there for Easter, and every time I return to Burton, BC, I try a little bit more to tone down my wardrobe. This upcoming long weekend, we are heading back for a few days; lets see what I end up packing in my Louis Vuitton duffel bag. Oh small town folk, so interesting.

My Window

Its frightening to think of how quickly hours turn into days, days turn into a week, weeks build up to compile a month, and them out of nowhere, its May, and the last time I posted anything was April. I've been working on refocusing my life and regaining some solid inspiration. People say that this city, or even this country, is so uninspiring, but I beg to differ. Inspiration is not tied to a place or a thing or a time; its more of a feeling that can be felt under circumstances that cause us to step out of our box, think beyond our comfort zones, or sometimes, that simply make us see something mundane in a completely new light. Or perhaps I've just thrown together some eloquently chosen words to make myself sound intelligent. Regardless, I've been on this search, and have been pleasantly surprised at the simplistic nature my adventure has taken on. Plain and simple, inspiration is all around. My girlfriend's chiffon dress as it hangs on my curtain rail, dancing in the summer breeze that floats into my bedroom from the half-opened window. Doesn't it excite you for summer? I'm on a quest, and I'm excited for you to join me.

Everybody needs inspiration, everybody needs a song;
'cause there is no guarantee that this life is easy...

The Neo-Pop Star

If you can connect to the internet, chances are somewhere, sometime, you've either heard of, or seen, both of the young women photographed above. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta and Onika Tanya Maraj, or Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj as they are famously known, are both young musicians in their 20s who are making a wave in mainstream music - to say the least. I won't bother giving you a bio (that's what Wikipedia is for), but they have completely revolutionized what it means to be an artist today. While Lady Gaga personifies pop and Minaj is famous for her hip-hop rap style, both of these artists are often compared to each other, for obvious reasons. The obsession with fashion, the sky-high heels, the infatuation with wigs, over-the-top makeup, costumes changes to rival who knows what, and most importantly, catchy pop-infused music. And while I don't consider myself either a Monster of a Barb, I do have respect for these two. Using social media and fashion, they are iconizing themselves into our generation. More importantly, I think the outfits and physical appearance serves to show both us and the younger generation what a musician - an entertainer - is supposed to really be: a spectacle. Not someone to "look up to", not a "role model". I don't think any 4 year old girls or boys are wanting to emulate Lady Gaga when they're older. But do people genuinely enjoy her and her music? Yes, why not? I think Minaj and Gaga are doing a brilliant think by taking their music and their facade and putting it as out there as possible, clearly setting themselves apart from us regular folk. This, to me, is the new pop star - the neo-pop star - one who uses social media to engage with their fans, who uses couture looks for music videos, who uses overly explicit lyrics over a catchy beat to create a whirlwind of money, fame and glamor. I commend these women, and hope to continue to be a viewer of their spectacle.

Fashion Craving

Funny that the new men's fashion week and therefore new collections are about to hit the runway in two months, and I'm still talking about the shows from January. Another beauty of fashion; so fluid and dynamic, it doesn't make sense yet can make perfect sense at any time of the year. Anyway, this will serve as my last post dying over the January runways, and although most of us are gearing up for a warm summer, crazy people like me are looking forward to the next season, and getting excited for whats to come: big statement scarves, the hombre effect on full outfit, playing with textures, patterned bottoms, and a more muted color block. The above images were seriously my favorite looks; if I could, I would own every piece photographed and wear them to death. The Canali pants, the Louis bag, the Lanvin look from head-to-toe! But I guess those luxuries are reserved for superbloggers like Prince Pelayo. A man can dream though, right?

Its awesome when I don't have to commission someone to take my photo for my blog, but instead am asked to pose for a style website from where I can grab the photo for myself! Can you tell the sun was in my eyes in the photo on the left? Hahahahaha. On a more serious note, it really is endearing to think that Calgary is finally embracing street style in a big way. The photo on the left is from my birthday a few weeks back, as I was leaving lunch and heading back to the office in Eau Clair, and the right is me outside of Calgary's Runway Monthly (see post below). I know there have been some street style blogs kicking around for a while now, but it seems to have really taken off as of late (or maybe that's just because I was stopped twice within two weeks?). Either way, I'm proud of your Calgary; keep on doing your thing and I'll keep on doing mine.

Behind the Flash

THE BANK ON 8TH, 10.04.12

I was graciously invited to attend a new fashion event going on in Calgary over the next couple of months: Runway Monthly. Deemed to be the fix that fashion addicts can use to crush their craving for fashion, and marketed to be interesting for those in the industry and also those (like me) who work at a firm during the day but still love fashion, the event is open to all Calgarians really. I walked over on Tuesday evening was pleasantly surprised at the wicked turn out that the event had garnered, and the street style photographers were on the hunt (more on that later)! The event had a vibrant host, a trunk show featuring local Calgary designers, and two runway shows featuring ready-to-wear, along with a show styled by local stylists. The image above shows what a blogger's perspective looks like at these kind of things. I met some amazing people that evening - this city is overflowing with some very talented people, passionate for fashion and hungry for success.I left inspired and am certainly looking forward to the next event in May. Easter Getaway

UPPER ARROW LAKE AT NAKUSP, BRITISH COLUMBIA, 07.04.12

Once again, we packed up and headed to the girlfriend's family's property on a mountainside in British Columbia to celebrate Easter this year. The weather was prefect, the drive divine, the memories endless. The weekend encapsulated a total of eight home-made cakes, endless meals, movie-nights, walks in the woods, going quading, a campfire lunch on the beach, cuddling with rabbits, puppies, alpacas, chickens, vintage shopping, riding on horses, starting out at the stars, and being completely disconnected from the world (no cell service, no internet). So in other words, pure bliss. Easter Sunday saw our annual traditional Easter Egg Hunt, that all family members participated in, followed by a ham lunch. Well worth the six hour drive and the extra padding around the middle that we all inevitably came home with! Don't forgot to click "READ MORE" below for more photos.

That Moment

I love everything about this shot. This dude's killer hair. The fresh coffee on a chilly morning. The moment of anticipation before that hot caffeine hits the lips, then tongue. The way the snow/rain is falling. The historic fountain in the background. The tattoos and facial piercings. The juxtaposition of a gator-strap watch and fitted overcoat with alternative badass flair. The way the woman in his tattoo is whispering something in his ear. The over all effortless ease with which this gentleman carries himself. Fashion is so much more than clothes, hey?

A Sock Plant

Further to my post below on my birthday, I had to highlight this particular present that was conceptualized and brought to my life by my girl. Call me spoiled? Blessed? I say that I'm just darn lucky. Not only does she listen to me, but she uses opportunities to act on my desires. Where would I be without this girl? Lord only knows. Here's the scope: every morning when getting ready, I always made a comment about my socks. Working in a very uptight Accounting Firm means one of the only places where I can truly have fun with colors is with my socks, and while I do own a few pairs of Happy Socks, some Paul Smiths, a Marc Jacobs pair, I still yearned for more. My standard grey socks were seriously cramping my style, because I can't exactly rock a pair of bright red leopard skin socks every other day, so the socks had to spaced out, and thus, every single morning when getting ready, I complained about socks. "I need more socks", "I wish I had cooler socks" etc etc. So my woman did exactly what any sensible woman would: she created me a plan made entirely out of socks, with rolled up socks serving as budding fruit, ready to be picked. I mean, wow, I like to consider myself pretty creative but even I was awestruck at this brilliant idea. Yeah, spoiled I am. Because this was just part of the many gifts she showered me with. Throw in one of my favorite Parisian scents, a much-coveted silk scarf from a certain deceased London designer, a tank from my favorite runway designer and much more, and you've got a very fashion-happy Endoxist on his birthday.
